Casa Colombo occupies a roughly 200-year-old Moorish mansion in Bambalapitiya, Colombo 4, originally built by a wealthy Indian trading family. Tucked down its own cul-de-sac off Galle Road, the gated property is private in a way few city hotels manage, despite sitting in the middle of one of Colombo's busiest residential and commercial districts, close to the everyday rhythm of Galle Road itself but shielded from it.
The restoration is the work of Lalin Jinasena, a protégé of the celebrated Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, and it shows: the mansion's original Italian and Indian mosaic floors, carved arches, moulded ceilings and Moorish-styled balconies have been retained and restored rather than replaced, and Jinasena went as far as custom-designing the furniture, fabrics and even the cutlery and crockery using Sri Lankan craftsmen and materials throughout. The result is a genuinely retro-chic interior built around the bones of the original house, not a generic boutique aesthetic layered on top of it after the fact.
The mansion's grand hall has become HVN, the hotel's restaurant, serving fusion cuisine in a room whose decor is one of the property's most-mentioned features, and there is a separate bar and lounge for drinks before or after dinner. With just 12 suites, the hotel keeps its footprint small; guests have the use of both an indoor and an outdoor pool, a fitness centre and a spa offering massages, body treatments and facials, so the amenity list is compact but genuinely complete rather than padded out.
