The usual approach to the east coast
A hundred and thirty-two kilometres and around three hours, dropping off the edge of the hill country and running east. This is how most people reach Arugam Bay, and it is why Ella and Arugam Bay so often appear in the same itinerary — not because they resemble one another, but because the road makes the pairing sensible.
Off the escarpment
The first part is descent, and it is slow in the way all descents here are slow: the road gives up its height in bends rather than gradients. Below the escarpment the landscape changes quickly, from tea and cloud to dry-zone scrub and heat, and the driving gets easier as the scenery gets flatter. It is a short enough run to do after a morning in Ella and still arrive with the afternoon left.
What the drive from Ella to Arugam Bay is actually like
Leaving Ella
Ella sits in a gap in the hills and every road to it is a mountain road. From Kandy the route goes up through tea country and stays high; from the south coast it climbs from sea level in one long haul. Either way the surface is decent and the corners are constant, and the average speed is low no matter what the map suggests. Cloud comes down in the afternoon through much of the year and slows things further.
Arriving in Arugam Bay
This is the far side of the island and there is no expressway to it. The route from the airport runs south and then east across the country on ordinary roads, which is why a journey of about 347 kilometres takes the best part of seven and a half hours rather than the four the distance suggests. Most visitors do not come directly: the approach from Ella is 132 kilometres and around three hours, and arriving that way turns one very long day into two reasonable ones.
Where the driver meets you in Ella
The town is small and built along one main road, and parking near the centre is limited, so drivers usually wait at the top or bottom of it rather than outside a particular guesthouse. Many people ride the train in from Nuwara Eliya or Haputale and take a car onward from here — arranging the car to meet the train is common and the station is easy to find.
Arriving in Arugam Bay
Accommodation is spread along the bay rather than gathered in a centre, so give the property name and which end of the beach it stands at, not just the town. Season matters here more than anywhere else on the island — the east coast runs May to September, the opposite of the south and west — and outside it many places are closed, so confirm your accommodation is open before booking the transfer to it.
Worth stopping for on the way
- Nine Arch Bridge, Ella — A colonial-era viaduct on the hill railway, in the jungle below Ella. Free, and busiest when a train is due. Allow 1–2 hours. Check the train times before you walk down — the bridge is worth ten minutes without one and an hour with.
- Diyaluma Falls — The second-highest waterfall on the island, dropping 220 metres in a single fall, with natural pools at the top for anyone willing to walk up. Allow a few hours. The pools are reached by a path from the road above, not from the base — about forty minutes up. Go with somebody who knows the turning.
- Ravana Falls — A wide fall right beside the Ella to Wellawaya road, named for the king who is said to have hidden Sita in the caves above it. Allow an hour. It is at its best just after rain and can be a trickle in the dry months. Five minutes from Ella, so it costs nothing to look.

The bus is cheapest and runs often, but it stops constantly, luggage is what you can hold, and the timetable is a suggestion. The train is the most comfortable public option and on the hill lines it is a reason people come to Sri Lanka at all — but it goes where the rails go, seats sell out ahead in season, and it will not take you to a hotel door. A private car carries luggage, leaves when you decide, stops where you ask, and ends at an address.

Book by the bags rather than by the people. Four passengers with hand luggage and four at the end of a long trip are different vehicles. Surfboards, golf clubs, tripods and pushchairs need saying in advance, because they change the class rather than merely filling it.
Travelling with children
A long drive is best broken rather than hurried, and a private car lets you stop when a child needs to rather than when a timetable allows. Child seats are requested when you book — ask in advance and confirm it, because an unconfirmed request is not a seat.
Addresses
Give the full property name and the road it stands on. Sri Lankan addresses are often descriptive rather than numbered, several main roads change name along their length, and guesthouses on one lane can share most of a name. A precise drop-off is worth more than a precise pickup: a wrong turn at the end costs everybody the most patience.
