98 Acres Resort & Spa takes its name from the tea estate it sits on, at Greenland Estate just off Passara Road above Ella. The 46 chalet-style rooms and suites are built into the hillside among the working tea bushes of the estate, each designed to look out over the plantation and the mountains beyond rather than toward each other, which gives most rooms an open, uninterrupted view across the valley.
The chalets are simply furnished, in keeping with the estate setting, with private verandas positioned to make the most of the surrounding tea rows and hills. The resort is built as a series of low structures stepped down the slope rather than one large block, which keeps the tea plantation itself the dominant feature of the property rather than the buildings, and gives the resort a lower, more spread-out footprint than a conventional multi-storey hotel.
At the centre of the resort is an infinity pool positioned to appear to run straight into the mountains behind it, alongside two restaurants and a spa offering treatments drawn from the surrounding hill country. A fitness centre and shuttle service round out the facilities, and the estate setting extends to walking paths through the tea bushes themselves for guests who want to explore the plantation on foot rather than just look at it from a balcony.
