Amangalla

Amangalla occupies one of the oldest and most storied addresses inside Galle Fort, the Dutch-built old town at the southern tip of Sri Lanka that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. The oldest sections of the building date back to the late seventeenth century, when it served as the headquarters of the Dutch commander and his officers, and later as a billet for British troops after they took the fort in 1796.

In 1865 the building was converted into a hotel, and by 1899 it had been bought by the Burgher businessman Albert Ephraums and renamed the New Oriental Hotel. For most of the twentieth century it was run by the hotelier Nesta Brohier, who was born in one of its bedrooms and who, by most accounts, would greet arriving guests on the front steps with her dalmatians while a pianist played inside — a New Oriental Hotel that became, in its own right, part of Galle's identity for close to 140 years, and a fixture for generations of travellers passing through what was then one of Ceylon's principal ports.

In 2004, Adrian Zecha — founder of the Aman group and, by then, a longtime guest of the New Oriental — bought the property and restored it as Amangalla, bringing Aman's particular brand of understated, minimalist luxury to a building with three centuries of continuous history behind it. The restoration kept much of the colonial-era structure and character intact rather than replacing it, down to original timber floors and high, shuttered windows, which is part of what distinguishes Amangalla from newer luxury builds elsewhere on the coast.

The hotel's amenities are built around that same sense of restrained heritage rather than a modern resort footprint: a 21-metre outdoor pool shaded by palms sits within the gardens, alongside The Baths, a spa with five treatment rooms and two hydrotherapy suites offering Ayurvedic-influenced massage, hot and cold plunge pools, steam rooms and saunas. The Dining Room, set at one end of the hotel's original Great Hall, serves Sri Lankan and international food, while the Veranda and Pool Terrace handle all-day dining and afternoon tea, and a Library lined with memorabilia from the building's history remains one of its quieter corners.

What guests are buying into at Amangalla, more than any specific amenity list, is that continuity: a hotel that has occupied the same Fort building since Dutch rule, passing from colonial administration to a beloved family-run institution to one of the world's most recognised luxury hotel groups, without ever leaving Galle Fort's walls.
