Cinnamon Life is a genuinely different kind of property from the beach resorts that dominate Sri Lanka's coast, and worth understanding on its own terms. It is a large city hotel occupying part of a much bigger mixed-use development on Slave Island in Colombo, on the waterfront of Beira Lake, built alongside residential towers, an office tower and a shopping mall as one integrated complex rather than a stand-alone hotel building.
The development was a long-running project, reportedly around a decade in construction, and opened its doors to guests in 2025. The building was designed by the architect Cecil Balmond, with a distinctive moonstone-inspired shape intended as a nod to Polonnaruwa, one of Sri Lanka's ancient cities — a design reference that ties a very contemporary skyscraper back to the country's architectural history.
The hotel itself occupies 30 floors of the tower, with the main reception and check-in area set unusually high up, on level 24, giving arriving guests a view over Colombo toward the Lotus Tower rather than a ground-floor lobby experience.
