Club Villa began life in 1976 as a private four-bedroom holiday house, designed by Geoffrey Bawa — the architect whose work around Bentota helped define Sri Lanka's tropical modernist style. It was later expanded into a small boutique hotel, and that residential origin is still the property's defining character: this is one of Bawa's more intimate, domestic-scale works, quite different from the larger resort hotels he designed nearby along the same coast, and it has kept that house-like feel rather than growing into a conventional resort with wings and a lobby.
Accommodation is limited to just 15 individually styled rooms, including the Club Suite, and each is furnished with colonial Dutch antiques and handwoven batik textiles rather than standardised hotel furniture — every room reads as its own space instead of a repeated template rolled out across a floor plan. Original artworks by two well-known Sri Lankan artists, Laki Senanayake and Barbara Sansoni, are displayed through the property, adding a further layer of local character beyond the architecture itself, and giving the public spaces something closer to a private art collection than a hotel corridor.
The grounds are built around a large tropical garden, with mature trees shading the pool and sun loungers set out on the grass beneath the palms rather than around a hard pool deck. Guests regularly note the garden's wildlife as part of the stay — fireflies in the evening, chipmunks moving through the grounds, and the occasional train passing on the coastal railway line that runs along the edge of the property, part of the everyday texture of staying here rather than a distraction from it.
The pool itself is modest in size, in keeping with the hotel's scale, but well kept and sized appropriately for a property with only 15 rooms rather than built for a resort crowd competing for loungers. The beach is a short walk away, reached by crossing the railway tracks that run along this stretch of Bentota, as at most hotels in the area, and staff are noted for the kind of attentive, personal service that comes more easily in a house of this size than in a large resort.
