Ella Jungle Resort is built into tropical jungle on the banks of the Kirindi Oya river, well away from Ella's town centre and deliberately hard to reach by design. Guests are driven down a private track in a 4x4 to a landing point, from where the resort itself is reached either on foot across a suspension bridge or by a cable car strung across the valley — reportedly the only guest cable car of its kind in Sri Lanka, and as much a part of the experience as the accommodation at the other end.
The resort is made up of 17 jungle chalets, each split into two rooms on separate floors, built with parquet flooring, mosquito nets and seating areas that open onto balconies over the river. Deluxe rooms and suites are positioned to catch the sound and view of the water below, and the style throughout is rustic rather than polished, in keeping with a property whose main asset is the jungle around it rather than a manicured resort landscape.
The setting brings a genuine abundance of flora and fauna most Ella hotels can't offer from a hillside garden — the resort sits inside real tropical forest rather than beside it, and the jungle itself, not a curated view of it, is the main feature guests come for.
Activities are built around that setting: guided walks to nearby waterfalls, a rope course and zip-lining through the jungle canopy, and treks led by resort guides through the forest surrounding the river.
