The Galle Face Hotel has been open since 1864, making it one of the oldest hotels operating anywhere east of Suez and the oldest hotel of any note in Colombo. It began life as Galle Face House, a Dutch villa that became a gathering place for colonial gentlemen before four British entrepreneurs converted it into a hotel that, by the late nineteenth century, had earned a reputation as the finest hotel east of Suez — a history the property leans into rather than smooths over, with its colonial-era architecture largely intact rather than replaced by later development.
Its 156 rooms and suites are spread across four floors and two wings, decorated in a deliberately colonial style with hardwood furniture, fine linens and spacious, modern bathrooms fitted in behind the period detailing. Seven heritage suites go further, adding evening drinks and canapés and butler service on request, for guests who want the fuller version of the hotel's old-world routine rather than a standard room.
Three restaurants carry that same sense of history and place: The 1864, named for the hotel's founding year, serves modern European food; The Verandah serves Sri Lankan dishes; and Sea Spray specialises in seafood, set with the ocean in view. Afternoon high tea has been served at the hotel continuously for around 140 years, a tradition few other properties in the region can claim with a straight face, and it remains a daily fixture rather than an occasional special event.
Outdoors, the hotel is home to the only saltwater swimming pool in Colombo, open daily, and its croquet lawn is where guests still play with a Pimm's in hand, one of several small rituals the hotel has kept alive rather than retired. A small museum and art gallery on site houses, among other pieces, the Duke of Edinburgh's first car — a curious, specific artefact that sums up the hotel's approach: not a recreation of history, but a building that has simply been open, continuously, on the same stretch of coastline, since it happened.
Unlike Colombo's newer towers, the Galle Face Hotel has not tried to compete on height or scale; its four-floor, two-wing layout is a direct legacy of its nineteenth-century construction, and the hotel has chosen to preserve that footprint rather than redevelop upward. That decision is part of what gives the property its distinct standing among Colombo's five-star hotels — a working museum of sorts, where guests can stay in rooms that have hosted more than a century and a half of travellers rather than a building finished within the last few decades.

Questions about this transfer
How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Galle Face Hotel?
From Rs 5,070 for the 37.7 km, about 51 min. That is a fixed price for the whole car, quoted before you book, not a meter reading.
How long does the transfer to Galle Face Hotel take?
About 51 min in normal traffic. Arrivals at Bandaranaike are busiest in the early morning, when the long-haul flights land together.
Will the driver wait if my flight is late?
Yes. Give your flight number when you book and your driver has it. There is no automatic flight tracking yet, so if you are delayed, message your driver on the number in your confirmation. Extended waiting beyond the pickup window is chargeable on a point-to-point transfer, and the terms say by how much.
Can I book a return transfer from Galle Face Hotel?
Yes — the same journey in reverse, at the same fixed price, booked at the same time or later.

One fixed price for the whole car, not per seat. There is no meter, so the figure you are quoted is the figure the booking honours. Give your flight number when you book and your driver has it.
The return leg from Galle Face Hotel is the same journey booked the other way, at the same price, and can be arranged now or later in your stay. Departures want you at Bandaranaike three hours before a long-haul flight, so add the 51 min back to that.
