Galle Fort Hotel occupies a three-hundred-year-old Dutch-era mansion at No. 28 Church Street, inside Galle Fort, the fortified old town that UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site in 1988 for the way it preserves an intact example of a European-built fortified city in South Asia. Before it became a hotel, the building had a genuinely varied history: it has served as a gem merchant's mansion, a Royal Air Force barracks, a post office, a bakery, a lapidary, and reportedly even an informal cricket pitch for the Fort's younger residents.
The restoration kept much of that layered history visible rather than erasing it. Grand eighteenth-century doors and windows survive from the building's time as a Dutch mansion, alongside a Palladian colonnade, an entrance arch, and a Regency-style top floor added during its gem-merchant period — architectural features from at least two distinct eras standing side by side under one roof. Each of the twelve guestrooms is said to evoke a different period of Galle's history, furnished with a curated mix of antiques and original art rather than uniform hotel decor.
The restoration itself was recognised in 2007 with a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Distinction, with the citation specifically noting how the project turned an abandoned historic residential compound into a boutique hotel while keeping the spirit of Galle Fort's fortified, colonial-era streetscape intact. With just twelve rooms, it remains one of the smaller heritage hotels inside the Fort, and Church Street itself is one of the old town's principal thoroughfares, lined with similarly aged buildings.
Day to day, the hotel is built around a frangipani-scented courtyard pool skirted by a grand verandah, a restaurant serving heritage Sri Lankan dishes alongside Western breakfast standards, and a bar noted for its take on arrack, Sri Lanka's traditional spirit.
