The Grand Hotel traces its origins back to 1828, when Sir Edward Barnes, the fifth British Governor of Ceylon, built a private bungalow on the site known as Barnes Hall, using it as a retreat during his time overseeing the development of Nuwara Eliya as a hill-country escape from Colombo. After Barnes left the island in 1831, the property passed to a planter, Reginald Beauchamp Downall, who began running it as a guest house — the point at which it started its life as a hotel rather than a private residence.
In 1892, the Nuwara Eliya Hotels Company Limited bought the property, and the building grew substantially over the following decades: a second storey was added in the 1890s, followed by the Governors Wing to the north and the Golf Wing to the south in the early 1900s. The building reached its current form in the 1930s, when a third storey was added along with the mock-Tudor facade that still gives the hotel its distinctive half-timbered, English manor-house appearance today, complete with steep gables and dark exposed timber framing against white-rendered walls.
That architecture, along with the hotel's manicured lawns and gardens, has made it one of the most recognisable buildings in Nuwara Eliya, a town whose colonial-era hill stations and English-style architecture earned it the nickname "Little England." Past guests are said to have included the Maharaja of Kapurthala, Jagatjit Singh, and the tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton, whose plantations covered much of the surrounding hill country, and the hotel became a hub of the town's social calendar during the colonial era, hosting the gatherings and balls typical of a hill-station society built around tea planters and British administrators.
In February 2007, the building was formally designated an Archaeological Protected Monument of Sri Lanka, a recognition of its place in the country's colonial architectural history rather than just its standing as a hotel. Today it runs to 154 rooms, including seven suites, spread across its three storeys, with several restaurants, a spa, an indoor pool and a billiards room among its facilities — a working hotel built inside a building whose bones date back to a governor's private bungalow nearly two centuries ago.

Questions about this transfer
How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to The Grand Hotel?
From Rs 24,200 for the 154.8 km, about 4 hr 48 min. That is a fixed price for the whole car, quoted before you book, not a meter reading.
How long does the transfer to The Grand Hotel take?
About 4 hr 48 min in normal traffic. Arrivals at Bandaranaike are busiest in the early morning, when the long-haul flights land together.
Will the driver wait if my flight is late?
Yes. Give your flight number when you book and your driver has it. There is no automatic flight tracking yet, so if you are delayed, message your driver on the number in your confirmation. Extended waiting beyond the pickup window is chargeable on a point-to-point transfer, and the terms say by how much.
Can I book a return transfer from The Grand Hotel?
Yes — the same journey in reverse, at the same fixed price, booked at the same time or later.

How this transfer works
One fixed price for the whole car, not per seat. There is no meter, so the figure you are quoted is the figure the booking honours. Give your flight number when you book and your driver has it.
The return leg from The Grand Hotel is the same journey booked the other way, at the same price, and can be arranged now or later in your stay. Departures want you at Bandaranaike three hours before a long-haul flight, so add the 4 hr 48 min back to that.
