Jetwing Jaffna opened in April 2016 as one of the first international-standard hotels built in Jaffna town after the end of the civil war, and the opening was treated as significant enough that it was presided over by the country's president at the time. The seven-storey building stands on Mahatma Gandhi Road, formerly Clock Tower Road, right in the centre of Jaffna next to Cargills Square.
The hotel is a joint venture between Jetwing Hotels and the Mercantile Merchant Banking Group, developed under the name Yarl Hotels on land originally purchased in 1975 by N. U. Jayawardena, a former governor of the Central Bank of Ceylon. Construction began in 2012 and the building's design was scaled back from an original, taller concept before the current seven-storey structure was completed. The finished building holds 55 deluxe rooms, each with a work desk, minibar and free Wi-Fi, and the interiors draw on the peninsula's own culture and heritage rather than a generic international hotel look.
The main restaurant, Peninsula, serves a menu built around Jaffna's own specialities alongside more familiar international dishes, and the rooftop Jaffna Sky Lounge is the hotel's signature space — cocktails and small plates with a panoramic view over the city, its surrounding lagoons and the palm trees that dominate the skyline at sunset.
The location is as central as Jaffna gets: the hotel is within walking distance of the town's main market, the railway and bus terminals, Jaffna Fort and the Jaffna Public Library, putting most of what the old town has to offer within a short walk of the front door rather than a taxi ride away.
It's also, in a practical sense, one of the few hotels in Jaffna built from the ground up as a purpose-built hotel rather than converted from an older residence or institutional building — a distinction worth noting in a town where a fair share of the newer accommodation stock, heritage properties included, started life as something else.
