Jetwing Lighthouse

Jetwing Lighthouse stands on a headland above the Indian Ocean in Dadella, just outside the walls of Galle Fort, and it carries a pedigree that few hotels on this coast can claim: it was designed by Geoffrey Bawa, the architect most associated with modern Sri Lankan design, as one of his final major projects before his death in 2003. Laki Senanayake and Ena de Silva, two of the artists who worked alongside Bawa throughout his career, contributed to the building's interiors and details, and the finished hotel spans some 10,860 square metres across around 66 rooms.

The hotel is built around contrast in the way much of Bawa's late work was: a solid, fortress-like brick exterior — a deliberate echo of the nearby Dutch and Portuguese fortifications of Galle — opens onto airy, breeze-filled terraces and verandas overlooking the sea. A bronze spiral staircase and other bespoke details, the work of the same collaborators, run through the public spaces, and simple woven hammocks on the verandas sit against that more formal brick and bronze backdrop. Guests are served coconut pudding and champagne granita at tables laid with white linen, a small but deliberate detail of the hotel's particular mix of the rustic and the formal.

With around 66 rooms, it is a mid-sized luxury property rather than a sprawling resort, perched on a hillock with the ocean on one side and the historic city of Galle within reach on the other. Galle itself has been a major Indian Ocean trading port since well before European contact, later fortified in turn by the Portuguese and Dutch, and its old town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a skyline the hotel's elevated position looks toward.

Because it was built as a hotel from the outset rather than restored from an existing structure, Bawa had a freer hand here than in some of his adaptive-reuse projects elsewhere in Sri Lanka.
