Mahaweli Reach Hotel began in 1973, when John Atul Panabokke converted his own residence into a four-room guesthouse on the south bank of the Mahaweli River, on the Katugastota side of Kandy. It grew steadily from there — fifty rooms by 1982, the year it also listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange — before becoming, in October 2000, the first hotel in Kandy to hold a five-star classification, a milestone the hotel still trades on as part of its identity. The Panabokke family has stayed connected to the property since; Maldivian resort operator Universal Enterprises took a controlling stake in 2002, and J. A. Panabokke continues as managing director today, keeping a direct line back to the original owner.

The hotel's architecture, designed by Ashley de Vos, follows a colonial style that suits its riverside setting, and every guest room is positioned to face the Mahaweli rather than the surrounding hills or gardens — a layout decision that means the river is never incidental to a stay here, unlike hotels where only a subset of rooms get the water-facing outlook.

The property displays vintage cars around its grounds and wall hangings by Sri Lankan textile artist Ena de Silva, whose work also appears at Cinnamon Citadel further along the same river — a shared thread between two very differently run hotels on the same waterway, one family-founded and one part of a listed hospitality group.

The hotel holds ISO 9001:2008 certification and received Zero Carbon Hotel Stay accreditation in 2019, credentials that point to an operation run with more formal environmental and quality oversight than a typical family guesthouse, even as it keeps its founding family connection.

With just over a hundred rooms and four suites, Mahaweli Reach carries its history openly — a family-founded property that became Kandy's first five-star hotel, still built around the river frontage that defined it from the start, and still run by descendants of the family whose home it originally was.
