The Blue Water occupies a particular place in Sri Lankan hotel architecture: it was one of the last hotel projects Geoffrey Bawa worked on, and by most accounts the last one he personally supervised on site before his health prevented him from continuing. Built among the wild coconut groves of Thalpitiya, on the coast at Wadduwa, it carries the hallmarks of Bawa's late style: open courtyards, long shaded corridors, and a building that keeps stepping outside into gardens and water rather than staying sealed inside a single envelope.
The hotel's swimming pool is one of the largest in Sri Lanka's hotel sector, with sections shaded by coconut palms and a layout that runs the pool right up toward the beach and ocean beyond it, so the line between pool, garden and sea blurs rather than being sharply defined. Streams, fountains and ponds are worked through the grounds throughout, a recurring device in Bawa's work and one that's especially pronounced here, with water treated as part of the architecture rather than an amenity added afterward.
Beyond the pool, the resort's spa offers Ayurvedic and Balinese treatments in individual pavilions set apart from the main building, continuing the same courtyard-and-pavilion logic as the rest of the property rather than being housed in a single enclosed spa block. Dining runs across several venues typical of a full-service beach resort of this size.
Wadduwa itself sits on a quieter, less developed part of the coast south of Colombo, without the density of hotels found around Bentota or Beruwala further south, and Bawa's choice of a relatively open site here gave the design room for a lower-density, more spread-out layout than would have been possible on a more built-up stretch of beach.
For anyone with an interest in Bawa's architecture, The Blue Water has a particular significance as effectively his closing statement in hotel design, built at the end of a career that also produced Heritance Ahungalla and Heritance Kandalama, among others, and it shows the same tropical modernist instincts in a more matured, pared-back form. For guests without that interest, it functions simply as a well-established beachfront resort built around water, shade and coconut groves rather than a more conventional resort layout.

Questions about this transfer
How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to The Blue Water?
From Rs 15,570 for the 64.6 km, about 1 hr 53 min. That is a fixed price for the whole car, quoted before you book, not a meter reading.
How long does the transfer to The Blue Water take?
About 1 hr 53 min in normal traffic. Arrivals at Bandaranaike are busiest in the early morning, when the long-haul flights land together.
Will the driver wait if my flight is late?
Yes. Give your flight number when you book and your driver has it. There is no automatic flight tracking yet, so if you are delayed, message your driver on the number in your confirmation. Extended waiting beyond the pickup window is chargeable on a point-to-point transfer, and the terms say by how much.
Can I book a return transfer from The Blue Water?
Yes — the same journey in reverse, at the same fixed price, booked at the same time or later.

How this transfer works
One fixed price for the whole car, not per seat. There is no meter, so the figure you are quoted is the figure the booking honours. Give your flight number when you book and your driver has it.
The return leg from The Blue Water is the same journey booked the other way, at the same price, and can be arranged now or later in your stay. Departures want you at Bandaranaike three hours before a long-haul flight, so add the 1 hr 53 min back to that.
