Ulagalla by Uga Escapes occupies a 58-acre estate at Thirappane, near Anuradhapura, built around two reservoirs, lush paddy fields and lily-covered ponds. What sets the property apart from most resorts in the region is its centrepiece: the Ulagalla Walawwa, a manor house built well over a century ago as the residence of a local Rate Mahattaya, or regional chieftain. Uga acquired the property in 2005 and restored the old manor house rather than replacing it, and today it houses the hotel's reception, restaurant, bar and kitchen — guests pass through a genuine piece of Sri Lankan domestic architecture on the way to their rooms, not a themed reproduction of one built for the purpose.
Accommodation is spread across 25 villas in three categories: the Ulagalla Pool Villa at around 1,380 square feet, the Deluxe Pool Villa at around 2,100 square feet, and the larger Nikawewa Pool Villa at around 3,343 square feet. Every villa has its own private plunge pool and a separate living area, and the villas are set apart from one another across the estate rather than clustered together, giving the property a strong sense of privacy that is harder to achieve at hotels built around a single central pool.
The estate's paddy fields and organic farm feed directly into its two restaurants. Kamatha, an award-winning restaurant serving traditional Sri Lankan food, is built out in the middle of a working paddy field, so guests eat with the fields themselves as the immediate view; Liyawela serves international fusion dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner in a more conventional setting. Both draw on vegetables from the on-site organic farm, fish from the estate's lakes, free-range meats and rice grown in Ulagalla's own paddies, giving the kitchens a genuinely local supply chain rather than one assembled for the brochure.
Signature experiences build on that same estate-grown character, including a private champagne breakfast served on a treetop platform and an organic farm cooking demonstration followed by lunch, both drawing directly on what the property grows and raises on its own land rather than on ingredients brought in from elsewhere.
The estate also hosts an Elephant Research Centre, which supports work on reducing human-elephant conflict in the surrounding area — a reminder that Ulagalla sits on the edge of genuinely wild country rather than a purely cultivated resort landscape. Between the restored walawwa, the paddy-field dining and the semi-wild grounds, Ulagalla reads less as a constructed luxury property and more as a working estate that happens to take guests.
