Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits on a rugged, largely undeveloped stretch of beach at the southern edge of Yala National Park, where the jungle runs straight down to the Indian Ocean. It's one of three properties in the Resplendent Ceylon collection, created by the family behind the Dilmah tea company, alongside Ceylon Tea Trails in the hill country and Cape Weligama on the south coast — a trio the group markets together as a single journey from tea estate to clifftop to safari camp.
The lodge is built around 28 domed units the property calls Cocoons, scattered through the grounds near small watering holes rather than lined up along the beach, so the layout follows the landscape rather than imposing a grid on it. At the centre of the property, an open-air, bamboo-clad structure called the Den and an adjoining dining pavilion are designed to echo the boulders scattered along the beach outside, wrapping around a free-form swimming pool rather than a conventional rectangular one. The design work behind the lodge has been recognised in its own right within the architecture and hospitality press, for the way the built structures are shaped to sit alongside, rather than against, the natural rock formations on the site.
Food follows the same logic: menus of Sri Lankan cooking change daily rather than running to a fixed rotation, and the property lays on sundowner cocktails and picnics out on the beach dunes as the sun goes down over the ocean. Game drives and walking safaris into Yala run from the lodge, with leopards, elephants, sloth bears and a wide range of birdlife among the park's regular sightings.
The lodge holds two Michelin Keys, the only property in Sri Lanka recognised at that level under the Michelin Guide's hotel rating system, and it is a member of Relais & Châteaux, the international association of independently owned luxury properties — recognition that places it among a small handful of hotels anywhere in the country judged at that tier.
