Ten kilometres, about twenty minutes, and the shortest transfer in the country. Negombo is the closest town to the airport by some distance, which is why so many itineraries begin and end there rather than in Colombo.
The case for it is simple. Long-haul flights land at awkward hours. Arriving somewhere twenty minutes away, sleeping, and starting the country properly the next morning is a better first day than three hours in a car after a night on a plane — and a better last day than a pre-dawn drive from the hills to make a morning flight.
What Negombo actually is
A working fishing town with a long beach and a lagoon, not a resort built for visitors. The fish market is real and busy in the early morning. It is not the prettiest coast in Sri Lanka and nobody claims otherwise; what it is, is convenient, awake at the hours flights arrive, and twenty minutes from the terminal.

The expressway from Katunayake to the northern edge of Colombo is the only stretch of road on this journey that behaves predictably, and it does most of the work. The old road through Ja-Ela and Wattala is still there and still used when the expressway is closed, but it runs through the middle of every town on the way and takes very much longer. Going north to Negombo instead is a short run on ordinary roads.

The closest beach town to the airport, and near enough that the journey is measured in minutes rather than hours — which is exactly why so many first and last nights on the island are spent here. The road is ordinary rather than expressway, running through town for most of its length, but the distance is short enough that it rarely matters.

- Kalpitiya — A sand peninsula and lagoon system known for spinner dolphin pods, kitesurfing and quiet. Whales pass offshore between December and April. Allow a full day, or stay overnight. Dolphin boats leave at first light and it is a three-hour drive from Colombo, so the day only works if you stay the night before.
