The single thing worth planning around. Colombo empties to this coast at the weekend and returns on Sunday evening, and the northbound expressway shows it. Leaving in the morning or after eight avoids the worst.

Give the hotel name or the district number. The expressway ends south of the centre and the remaining distance varies a great deal depending on which part of the city you want.

If the airport is where you are actually going, do not route through Colombo. The road north around the city is quicker and this journey is not the first leg of it.

Leaving Bentota
One of the easier runs from the airport — the expressway covers nearly all of it and the last part is a short stretch of ordinary road. The river mouth splits the area in two, and the hotels on the far bank take noticeably longer to reach than the distance suggests, because the crossing is at a fixed point rather than wherever you happen to be.
Arriving in Colombo
Almost every long journey on the island starts or ends here, and the first and last half hour is usually the slowest part of it. The Southern and Katunayake expressways both begin on the edge of the city, so once you are on one the distance stops mattering much — it is reaching the entrance that costs the time. Galle Road carries most of the southbound traffic and Marine Drive runs beside it as a release valve, though it rejoins the same congestion further down.
Where the driver meets you in Bentota
Say which side of the river the hotel is on if you know; it saves a driver a doubling back that adds real time to a short journey. The resorts here are large and set back from the road behind their own gates, so the gate is the meeting point rather than the beach.
Arriving in Colombo
Give a hotel name and a road, not a landmark: several of the main roads change name every kilometre or two and the numbered ones are used more in speech than the names. Colombo traffic is heaviest either side of the school run and again in the early evening, so a journey booked for the middle of the day will move considerably faster than the same journey at half past four.
Worth stopping for on the way
- Kitulgala — White water on the Kelani river, and the valley where The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed. Grade 2 and 3 rapids that run all year. Allow a morning, 3–4 hours. The river is highest just after the south-west monsoon. Bring a change of clothes — you will not stay dry, and the drive back is long in wet shorts.
- Bentota — River and beach resorts on the south-west coast, and the easiest beach day from Colombo on the expressway. Allow a day trip, or stay overnight. The river safari is the thing to do here, not just the beach.
- Madu River — A mangrove estuary of small islands reached by boat, with a cinnamon island and a temple among them. Kingfishers, monitor lizards and water the colour of tea. Allow a morning, 2–3 hours, and an entry ticket is required. Agree the route before you leave the jetty — the short loop and the long one are different trips at similar-sounding prices.
- Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery — A working hatchery on the south-west coast where eggs are protected and hatchlings released. Five of the seven sea turtle species in the world nest on this coast. Allow an hour or two, and an entry ticket is required. Go late in the afternoon: releases happen around dusk, and handling the hatchlings in the middle of the day is worse for them than not seeing them at all.

The bus is cheapest and runs often, but it stops constantly, luggage is what you can hold, and the timetable is a suggestion. The train is the most comfortable public option and on the hill lines it is a reason people come to Sri Lanka at all — but it goes where the rails go, seats sell out ahead in season, and it will not take you to a hotel door. A private car carries luggage, leaves when you decide, stops where you ask, and ends at an address.
Luggage
Book by the bags rather than by the people. Four passengers with hand luggage and four at the end of a long trip are different vehicles. Surfboards, golf clubs, tripods and pushchairs need saying in advance, because they change the class rather than merely filling it.
Travelling with children
A long drive is best broken rather than hurried, and a private car lets you stop when a child needs to rather than when a timetable allows. Child seats are requested when you book — ask in advance and confirm it, because an unconfirmed request is not a seat.

Give the full property name and the road it stands on. Sri Lankan addresses are often descriptive rather than numbered, several main roads change name along their length, and guesthouses on one lane can share most of a name. A precise drop-off is worth more than a precise pickup: a wrong turn at the end costs everybody the most patience.
