Two very different sites
Dambulla is a cave temple you visit in an hour or two. Anuradhapura is a sacred city spread over many square kilometres and is a half-day at minimum. Treating them as equivalent stops is the usual planning error on this leg.
Getting around at the other end
The distances between the major stupas at Anuradhapura are too far to walk comfortably in the heat. Bicycles are the traditional answer; keeping the car and driver for the day is the other, and on a hot afternoon it is the one most people wish they had chosen.

Leaving Dambulla
Dambulla sits where the roads to Kandy, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee and the east all meet, which is why so many journeys pass through it whether or not they stop. The roads in every direction are flat dry-zone roads and quick by Sri Lankan standards. The cave temple is above the town on a rock, reached by a climb from the car park rather than a drive up.
Arriving in Anuradhapura
The road north is flat, straight and quick once clear of Colombo, running through the dry zone the whole way. It is a long journey but an undemanding one, and it is common to break it at Dambulla or to take in the ancient cities on the same trip rather than treating each as a separate outing.
Where the driver meets you in Dambulla
The town itself is a junction and a market rather than a destination, and most hotels are outside it on one of the roads leading away. Because it is a crossroads it is a natural place to change drivers or to start a Cultural Triangle trip, and it is common to be collected here having arrived by another route.
Arriving in Anuradhapura
The ancient city covers a very large area and the sites within it are much too far apart to walk between, so most visitors keep the car for the day rather than being dropped and collected. The modern town where the hotels are is separate from the ruins, which surprises people who have booked expecting to be within walking distance.
Worth stopping for on the way
- Anuradhapura Sacred City — The first capital, and a living pilgrimage site — the Sri Maha Bodhi is said to be the oldest planted tree on record. Allow half a day, and an entry ticket is required. It is far larger than it looks on a map. Keep the car with you rather than trying to walk between the stupas.
- Wilpattu National Park — The largest national park in Sri Lanka, named for the natural sand-rimmed lakes across it. Quieter than Yala, with leopard sightings that feel earned rather than queued for. Allow a full day, and an entry ticket is required. Fewer jeeps than Yala, and a bigger park — sightings take patience. Go in for the morning drive and take breakfast with you.
- Dambulla Royal Cave Temple — Five caves of painted ceilings and 150-odd Buddha statues, cut into the rock above the plain. Usually paired with Sigiriya. Allow 1–2 hours, and an entry ticket is required. It is a real climb to the caves and the stone is hot underfoot. Go early, and take socks.
- Kaudulla National Park — Elephants gather at the reservoir here in their hundreds through the dry season, moving between Kaudulla and Minneriya as the water drops. Allow an afternoon safari, and an entry ticket is required. Ask which park the herd is actually in that week — Kaudulla and Minneriya share the same elephants and the answer changes.

Travelling with children
A long drive is best broken rather than hurried, and a private car lets you stop when a child needs to rather than when a timetable allows. Child seats are requested when you book — ask in advance and confirm it, because an unconfirmed request is not a seat.

Sri Lankan addresses are often descriptive rather than numbered, several main roads change name along their length, and guesthouses on one lane can share most of a name. A precise drop-off is worth more than a precise pickup: a wrong turn at the end costs everybody the most patience.
