Getting to and from Dambulla
Dambulla sits where the roads to Kandy, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee and the east all meet, which is why so many journeys pass through it whether or not they stop. The roads in every direction are flat dry-zone roads and quick by Sri Lankan standards. The cave temple is above the town on a rock, reached by a climb from the car park rather than a drive up.
Arranging a pickup
The town itself is a junction and a market rather than a destination, and most hotels are outside it on one of the roads leading away. Because it is a crossroads it is a natural place to change drivers or to start a Cultural Triangle trip, and it is common to be collected here having arrived by another route.
