372.1 kilometres and 7 hours 40 minutes down the length of the A9. This is the longest departure on the site and it is a full day.
When to leave
Ten hours before an international departure. Seven of driving, three of check-in, and nothing in reserve. There is no version of this that is a pleasant morning.
The domestic flight
For most people leaving Jaffna to catch an international flight, flying south is the right answer. The road makes sense in the other direction, when you have the day and want to see the country between; it makes much less sense against a departure time.
If you are driving it
Go the day before and stay near the airport, or break it at Anuradhapura which is roughly halfway. Attempting it on the morning of a flight leaves no room at all for anything going wrong across 7 hours 40 minutes.
If you go by road anyway
Take the vehicle seriously. 7 hours 40 minutes is a working day in a car, and the difference between a saloon and a van over that distance is not a comfort preference — it decides what state you reach the airport in. Agree the stops when you book rather than negotiating them at hour four.
What the drive from Jaffna to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is actually like
Leaving Jaffna
The A9 runs the length of the island to get here and it is a genuinely long drive, but the road itself is one of the better ones in the country and the going is steady rather than difficult. The landscape changes as you go north — palmyra rather than coconut, flat and bright and quite unlike anywhere further south. Most people break the journey rather than doing it in one push.
Arriving in Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
The expressway from Katunayake to the northern edge of Colombo is the only stretch of road on this journey that behaves predictably, and it does most of the work. The old road through Ja-Ela and Wattala is still there and still used when the expressway is closed, but it runs through the middle of every town on the way and takes very much longer. Going north to Negombo instead is a short run on ordinary roads.
Where the driver meets you in Jaffna
The peninsula spreads out well beyond the town and several of the places people want to see are on islands reached by causeways, so a car for the duration makes more sense here than individual transfers. A driver who speaks Tamil is worth asking for; it is the working language of the north.
Arriving in Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
Arrivals opens onto a covered set-down area; drivers wait past the exit rather than inside the hall, and meeting outside the terminal building is normal here rather than a sign that something has gone wrong. Flights from Europe and the Gulf land in a cluster before dawn, which is the one time of day the road into Colombo is genuinely clear. Give the flight number when booking — a driver who has it will wait through a delay rather than a booked hour.
Worth stopping for on the way
- Jaffna & Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil — The northern peninsula — its own cuisine, language and pace, and a kovil that fills for the August festival. Allow two days or more. Seven and a half hours each way. Fly or take the train up and keep the car for the peninsula itself.

Where the driver meets you
Your driver collects you from any address in Jaffna at the time you set, and drops at the departures level. Give the flight number when you book and the pickup time is worked back from it — three hours before an international departure, plus the drive.
How a private transfer works
Choosing a vehicle
The choice is about luggage and legroom, not speed — no class arrives sooner, because the road decides that. Two adults with two large cases fit a sedan, but they will be sitting with a bag between them. Four people or more, or anyone carrying sports or camera equipment, wants a van.
Taxi, train or bus?
The bus is cheapest and runs often, but it stops constantly, luggage is what you can hold, and the timetable is a suggestion. The train is the most comfortable public option and on the hill lines it is a reason people come to Sri Lanka at all — but it goes where the rails go, seats sell out ahead in season, and it will not take you to a hotel door. A private car carries luggage, leaves when you decide, stops where you ask, and ends at an address.
Luggage
Book by the bags rather than by the people. Four passengers with hand luggage and four at the end of a long trip are different vehicles. Surfboards, golf clubs, tripods and pushchairs need saying in advance, because they change the class rather than merely filling it.
Travelling with children
A long drive is best broken rather than hurried, and a private car lets you stop when a child needs to rather than when a timetable allows. Child seats are requested when you book — ask in advance and confirm it, because an unconfirmed request is not a seat.
Addresses
Give the full property name and the road it stands on. Sri Lankan addresses are often descriptive rather than numbered, several main roads change name along their length, and guesthouses on one lane can share most of a name. A precise drop-off is worth more than a precise pickup: a wrong turn at the end costs everybody the most patience.
Booking and the price
The quote above is what you pay. It is fixed at booking rather than metered, so traffic on the day is the driver's problem rather than yours — which on a journey through towns is the difference that matters most. The same route in reverse is the same distance but not the same day: traffic peaks in opposite directions.
