The domestic flight
For most people leaving Jaffna to catch an international flight, flying south is the right answer. The road makes sense in the other direction, when you have the day and want to see the country between; it makes much less sense against a departure time.
If you are driving it
Go the day before and stay near the airport, or break it at Anuradhapura which is roughly halfway. Attempting it on the morning of a flight leaves no room at all for anything going wrong across seven hours.

The A9 runs the length of the island to get here and it is a genuinely long drive, but the road itself is one of the better ones in the country and the going is steady rather than difficult. The landscape changes as you go north — palmyra rather than coconut, flat and bright and quite unlike anywhere further south. Most people break the journey rather than doing it in one push.

The expressway from Katunayake to the northern edge of Colombo is the only stretch of road on this journey that behaves predictably, and it does most of the work. The old road through Ja-Ela and Wattala is still there and still used when the expressway is closed, but it runs through the middle of every town on the way and takes very much longer. Going north to Negombo instead is a short run on ordinary roads.

The peninsula spreads out well beyond the town and several of the places people want to see are on islands reached by causeways, so a car for the duration makes more sense here than individual transfers. A driver who speaks Tamil is worth asking for; it is the working language of the north.
