It is 19.8 kilometres and about 40 minutes from Kalutara to Bentota, the same short expressway hop travelled southbound. The distance is small, but the change at the other end is real. Kalutara is a town with a temple and a river mouth. Bentota is a resort stretch built around a river, a lagoon and a long beach, with water sports and large hotels as the main business.
Reading the geography
The Bentota river reaches the sea here, and the town sits on both banks. That matters for planning. A hotel on the northern bank and a hotel on the southern bank can be a few hundred metres apart as the crow flies and ten or fifteen minutes apart by road, since vehicles cross at one fixed bridge. Say which side your hotel is on when you book and the last stretch of the journey is straightforward.
Beruwala on the way
Beruwala sits between the two towns on a headland reached by a short causeway, with its working harbour on the seaward side. It is worth a pause if you have never seen a fishing port from the road. Early morning is the busy time, when the boats come in; by midday it is quieter and the road beside it clears.
Timing
Because the run is short, the departure time is flexible, and the main consideration is check-in. Most hotels in Bentota will not have rooms ready until early afternoon, so a leisurely late morning start with a stop on the way suits the hotel's clock better than an early one. If you carry on to Galle the same day, the Southern Expressway continues south from here.
Gate and bags
See the table above for each vehicle's fare. The resorts are large and set back from the road, so give the hotel name and let the driver ask for the gate. All bookings are made in advance, so the car waits for you at the time you set. A saloon is enough for a couple; a van suits a family with large cases or sports kit.
If you came from the airport the day before and want to see more of the south, you have chosen a good base. The old coast road runs close to the sea and has Ambalangoda, Hikkaduwa and Galle ahead if the plan allows.
What changes at the other end
Bentota offers things Kalutara does not. The river and lagoon support water sports such as jet skiing, banana boats and windsurfing, and boat trips go into the mangroves. The beach is long and the hotels are larger, with pools, spas and several restaurants each. If you have been enjoying a quiet stay in Kalutara and want more activity, this is the natural next stop.
Timing the move
The short distance leaves the choice of time open, and the best option is to build the move around the hotels. Leave Kalutara after a late breakfast, stop at Beruwala if you want to look at the harbour, and reach Bentota before lunch. Rooms there are usually ready in the early afternoon, and the lobby is a fine place to wait. If the weather is good, it is worth swimming or walking before the sun gets too strong.
Boat trips and the river
A river safari is one of the main things to do in Bentota, and the boats leave from jetties along the bank. Confirm the length of the trip and what it includes before you board, and take sun cream and a hat. The operators are used to tourists, but a clear agreement avoids surprises. Your driver can recommend a jetty near the hotel.
If you came from the north
Someone arriving from Colombo or the airport may have done this stretch in the other direction, and it is worth knowing that the road is the same. The Southern Expressway continues south, and Galle is about an hour beyond Bentota if you want to see the fort. Mention onward plans when you book and the driver can suggest a good time to go.
Which car for the resort strip
A saloon suits a couple; a van suits a family or a group with sports gear. The table above lists the classes and their fares.

Where the driver meets you
Give the pickup address in Kalutara when you book — a hotel name, a street address or a landmark all work. The driver calls or messages shortly before arriving, and waits 15 minutes at no charge.
How a private transfer works
Choosing a vehicle
The choice is about luggage and legroom, not speed — no class arrives sooner, because the road decides that. Two adults with two large cases fit a sedan, but they will be sitting with a bag between them. Four people or more, or anyone carrying sports or camera equipment, wants a van.
Taxi, train or bus?
The bus is cheapest and runs often, but it stops constantly, luggage is what you can hold, and the timetable is a suggestion. The train is the most comfortable public option and on the hill lines it is a reason people come to Sri Lanka at all — but it goes where the rails go, seats sell out ahead in season, and it will not take you to a hotel door. A private car carries luggage, leaves when you decide, stops where you ask, and ends at an address.
Luggage
Book by the bags rather than by the people. Four passengers with hand luggage and four at the end of a long trip are different vehicles. Surfboards, golf clubs, tripods and pushchairs need saying in advance, because they change the class rather than merely filling it.
Travelling with children
A long drive is best broken rather than hurried, and a private car lets you stop when a child needs to rather than when a timetable allows. Child seats are requested when you book — ask in advance and confirm it, because an unconfirmed request is not a seat.
Addresses
Give the full property name and the road it stands on. Sri Lankan addresses are often descriptive rather than numbered, several main roads change name along their length, and guesthouses on one lane can share most of a name. A precise drop-off is worth more than a precise pickup: a wrong turn at the end costs everybody the most patience.
Booking and the price
The quote above is what you pay. It is fixed at booking rather than metered, so traffic on the day is the driver's problem rather than yours — which on a journey through towns is the difference that matters most. The same route in reverse is the same distance but not the same day: traffic peaks in opposite directions.
