The last leg of a long journey
Most people driving this have just come down the expressway, which ends at Matara. After two or three hours of motorway this final stretch of coast road is the first proper look at where you are going, and it is worth not rushing.
Whale boats
Mirissa's boats leave early, shortly after dawn. If you are arriving the evening before an outing, this twenty minutes is the difference between a sensible night and a very early start from Matara.
Which beach
Mirissa is small but the accommodation spreads a good way along the bay and up the hill behind it. Give the property name rather than the town; the walk between one end and the other with luggage is longer than this drive.

Leaving Matara
The Southern Expressway now runs this far, which has changed the character of the journey completely — what used to be a slow day down the coast road is an easy run inland. The coast road still exists and is still the prettier way to do it if time is not the point. Beyond Matara the expressway ends and everything further east is on ordinary roads again.
Arriving in Mirissa
Far enough along the south coast that the expressway does most of the journey and the coast road finishes it. Whale-watching boats leave from the harbour early, which is the one thing that decides departure times here: for a morning sailing you are on the road before dawn, and every driver who works this coast expects it.
Where the driver meets you in Matara
A working southern town rather than a resort, so the pickup points are ordinary streets and the fort area by the sea. It is the usual jumping-off point for the far south and the east coast, and for those journeys the road conditions past here are worth asking a driver about before setting out.
Arriving in Mirissa
The bay is small and the road behind it is narrow, with most guesthouses reached down short lanes that a larger vehicle cannot easily turn in. Drivers will usually meet on the main road rather than at the door, and for a group with luggage that is worth planning for rather than discovering at the time.
Worth stopping for on the way
- Mirissa Whale Watching — Blue whales pass close to the shelf edge off the south coast. Boats leave at first light, November to April. Allow a morning, 3–5 hours, and an entry ticket is required. Boats leave at 6am, so travel down the night before. It is a long swell — take something for it.
- Tangalle — Wide, empty bays along the deep south coast, with the quietest sand of any of the beach towns. Good for walking, less good for swimming where the surf is heavy. Allow a full day, or stay overnight. The bays here have strong currents and few lifeguards. Ask at your hotel which end of the beach is safe on the day.

Book by the bags rather than by the people. Four passengers with hand luggage and four at the end of a long trip are different vehicles. Surfboards, golf clubs, tripods and pushchairs need saying in advance, because they change the class rather than merely filling it.

A long drive is best broken rather than hurried, and a private car lets you stop when a child needs to rather than when a timetable allows. Child seats are requested when you book — ask in advance and confirm it, because an unconfirmed request is not a seat.

A precise drop-off is worth more than a precise pickup: a wrong turn at the end costs everybody the most patience.
