Getting to and from Matara

The Southern Expressway now runs this far, which has changed the character of the journey completely — what used to be a slow day down the coast road is an easy run inland. The coast road still exists and is still the prettier way to do it if time is not the point. Beyond Matara the expressway ends and everything further east is on ordinary roads again.

Arranging a pickup

A working southern town rather than a resort, so the pickup points are ordinary streets and the fort area by the sea. It is the usual jumping-off point for the far south and the east coast, and for those journeys the road conditions past here are worth asking a driver about before setting out.
