Getting to and from Nuwara Eliya
Everything about this journey is decided by altitude. The road climbs through tea estates in a long series of hairpins, and while the distances involved are small the driving is slow and unavoidably so. It is cold at the top by Sri Lankan standards, often wet, and the cloud sits on the road for much of the afternoon. Coming from Kandy is the gentler approach; coming up from the south is steeper.
Arranging a pickup
The town is compact and easy to find your way around, and the hotels are mostly on or just off the main road through it. Ask for a car with working heating if you are travelling in the evening — it is one of the few places in the country where that is a real question rather than a joke.
