When to leave
Eight hours before an international departure. Five of driving and three of check-in, with nothing spare, which for a morning flight means a start in the middle of the night.
Breaking it
Dambulla is about two hours from here and almost exactly on the way. A night there on the way back turns an eight-hour departure into a three-hour one, and the cultural triangle is worth the stop regardless.

Leaving Trincomalee
The east coast is reached across the middle of the island rather than around it, and the road runs through the dry zone by way of Habarana. It is a long day whichever way you come, and the surface is good for most of it. The east has its dry season when the west has its wet one, which is why the journey is worth making in the months when the south coast is not.
Arriving in Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
The expressway from Katunayake to the northern edge of Colombo is the only stretch of road on this journey that behaves predictably, and it does most of the work. The old road through Ja-Ela and Wattala is still there and still used when the expressway is closed, but it runs through the middle of every town on the way and takes very much longer. Going north to Negombo instead is a short run on ordinary roads.
