Getting to and from Wilpattu National Park

The dry-zone country here runs flatter and sandier than the approach to the island's other big safari park, and the willu — natural lakes — scattered through it are what give the park its name rather than any single landmark. The road in from the coast crosses open scrub with little to slow a car down, while the shorter approach out of the old capital to the north-east is the quicker of the two whichever direction a booking starts from. Fewer vehicles use these roads than the roads into the south coast parks.

Arranging a pickup

A sedan manages the approach roads without any trouble, but the park itself is jeep territory, so the car waits at the gate rather than going in. Bookings timed around a dawn or dusk game drive are the norm here, the same as at every other park on this coast or inland.
