When to leave
Eight and a half hours before an international departure. The first two hours are ordinary road with no fast alternative, and that is the section that decides whether the rest is comfortable.

Leaving Yala National Park
The park is in the south-east and the drive there is long, with the last part on smaller roads through Tissamaharama. The coast road along the south is the usual approach and it is slower than the expressway sections further west. Nothing about this journey is difficult, but it is not a short one and afternoon arrivals are common.
Arriving in Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
The expressway from Katunayake to the northern edge of Colombo is the only stretch of road on this journey that behaves predictably, and it does most of the work. The old road through Ja-Ela and Wattala is still there and still used when the expressway is closed, but it runs through the middle of every town on the way and takes very much longer. Going north to Negombo instead is a short run on ordinary roads.

- Udawalawe National Park — Open scrub and reservoir country with the most reliable elephant sighting on the island — better odds than Yala, fewer vehicles. Allow a morning safari, and an entry ticket is required. Closer to Colombo than Yala and easier as a single overnight trip.
- Arugam Bay — The east coast surf point. Season is May to September — the opposite of the west and south coasts. Allow several days. Seven hours from Colombo. Worth breaking the drive at Ella or Yala rather than doing it in one push.
- Bundala National Park — A coastal wetland and RAMSAR site next door to Yala, and the better park for birds — flamingos, painted storks and open lagoons rather than jungle. Allow a morning safari, and an entry ticket is required. Quieter and cheaper than Yala, and better in the middle of the day when the animals in Yala have gone to ground.
