Getting to and from Yala National Park

The park is in the south-east and the drive there is long, with the last part on smaller roads through Tissamaharama. The coast road along the south is the usual approach and it is slower than the expressway sections further west. Nothing about this journey is difficult, but it is not a short one and afternoon arrivals are common.

Arranging a pickup

Safaris leave before dawn, and the vehicle that takes you into the park is not the vehicle that brought you — the park uses its own jeeps. So what is needed here is a car to the lodge and a car onward afterwards, rather than one that waits. The lodges are spread along the roads outside the park boundary and can be a fair distance apart.
