Hotel Sigiriya sits at the foot of the plain that Sigiriya Rock rises from, close enough that the ancient rock fortress dominates the view from much of the property. It is one of the older established hotels serving the site and is run under Browns Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality arm of Brown & Company PLC, one of Sri Lanka's long-standing diversified business groups with interests well beyond tourism.
The hotel positions itself as an eco-retreat rather than a conventional resort, and maintains its own on-site eco centre reflecting that focus on the surrounding nature reserve as much as the archaeological site next door. Guest rooms — a mix of superior and premium categories alongside a small number of suites, roughly eighty rooms in total — are designed with large windows intended to bring the surrounding greenery and, from many rooms, the rock itself, directly into the room rather than treating the view as an add-on.
Sigiriya Rock, the reason most guests are here, is a roughly 180-metre granite outcrop that the fifth-century king Kassapa I turned into a fortified palace, complete with surviving frescoes, engineered water gardens and the giant carved lion's paws that still guard the final staircase to the summit. It is one of Sri Lanka's eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in Asia, with the water gardens at its base considered among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world still in something like their original form.
