Getting to and from Jaffna

The A9 runs the length of the island to get here and it is a genuinely long drive, but the road itself is one of the better ones in the country and the going is steady rather than difficult. The landscape changes as you go north — palmyra rather than coconut, flat and bright and quite unlike anywhere further south. Most people break the journey rather than doing it in one push.

Arranging a pickup

The peninsula spreads out well beyond the town and several of the places people want to see are on islands reached by causeways, so a car for the duration makes more sense here than individual transfers. A driver who speaks Tamil is worth asking for; it is the working language of the north.
